NY-style technique bootcamp

NY STYLE TECHNIQUE BOOTCAMP

BY JOSE AGUILAR AND DAWN ENG

PERIOD:
Date: 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th April (Every Sunday)
Time: 6pm – 9pm

DURATION: 12 HOURS OVER 4 WEEKS

LEVEL: BEGINNER-INTERMEDIATE & ABOVE

Objective

Dancers who complete the 12-hour training will be equipped with a variety of New York-style salsa techniques that will allow them to dance better both socially and on stage. With the right theory and approach, they can unlock the ability to move with more speed and sharpness, spin faster, incorporate rhythmic body movement as well as lead/follow with fluidity.

Elements on musical appreciation will also be included in the training, so dancers are taught to identify key percussive and melodic rhythms that are ever-present in salsa music. They will also learn methods of interpreting these patterns through body movement, footwork and turn patterns.

Methodology

The focus of the training programme will be fundamentals – working through simple but essential concepts such as posture, body positioning, balance, and body mechanics to build a strong technical foundation in salsa. Equipped with theory rather than simply emulating the instructor, dancers slowly become more aware of how the body works to produce movement and are subsequently better able to pick up steps no matter the level.

Therefore, detailed explanations regarding hard-to-catch concepts like weight transfer, proper body isolation, body positioning and partnered connection will be provided throughout the sessions.

Programme

  • Week 1: Body isolation and Afro-cuban
  • Week 2: Mambo, Pachanga and Cha Cha Cha
  • Week 3: Spinning and partnerwork techniques
  • Week 4: Musicality

While working in each theme, the instructor will provide progressive exercises of increasing difficulty with guidance on proper execution. Dancers will perform the exercises under supervision to ensure that they are activating the correct muscle groups and maintaining the right posture throughout. Over time, dancers become independent and able to practice the sequences on their own.

At the end of the programme, dancers also leave with insights on their individual strengths and weaknesses and the knowledge on how to improve through independent work on specific exercises.
